About the Department

The Department of Tamil was established in the year 2007 along with the inception of Dr. Kalaignar Government Arts College. Since its establishment, the department has grown steadily and has now developed into a well-structured academic and research centre offering Undergraduate, Postgraduate, and Research programmes in Tamil Studies. The Department is enriched with highly qualified, talented, and dedicated faculty members who continuously strive to provide quality education and promote the richness of Tamil language, literature, and culture among students. The department has received approval to admit 60 students every year in the first year of the Undergraduate programme. Students in both Undergraduate and Postgraduate programmes actively engage in academic activities and achieve excellence in their studies. The Department of Tamil provides a strong academic environment supported by adequate library facilities, seminar halls, and research-oriented learning resources. Various academic and literary activities are conducted regularly to improve students' communication skills, critical thinking, creativity, and research abilities. Through these initiatives, students are encouraged to explore the richness of Tamil literature, grammar, history, and cultural heritage. The curriculum is designed in such a way that it not only strengthens students' knowledge in Tamil Studies but also helps them prepare effectively for State and Central Government competitive examinations. Students from Kulithalai and nearby areas greatly benefit from the programme as it provides them with opportunities to build strong academic and professional careers. Many students of the department have successfully participated in competitive examinations and achieved excellent results in various fields. The Department also focuses on shaping students into responsible individuals with social awareness, leadership qualities, and cultural values.
