About the Department

The Department of English at Dr Kalaignar Government Arts College Kulithalai was established in 2007 since the starting of the college. Over the years, it has gained significant reputation in the region for its stellar academic performance and peer exposure through various national and international conferences, subject expert lectures and seminars that are regularly held for the benefit of the students. The department also hosts a boastful collection of literature texts and journals in our department library for the convenient accessibility of our students.

We offer a three-year Undergraduate course, a two-year Postgraduate course and a research M.Phil. course. With a sanctioned strength of UG-60 and PG-35, the enrolled students are exposed to language through literature. Besides literary courses which foster life skills, communication skills and technical skills, inter-disciplinary courses are incorporated into the syllabus to ensure the holistic development of the students. Every member of the staff has a diversified portfolio and are actively expanding research work by their articles published in leading peer-reviewed journals.

An English degree opens a diverse world of professional avenues. Beyond the traditional roles of Teaching, Publishing and Academia, students also pursue to become communications executives and soft-skill trainers in corporate, IT sectors. In addition, with the bloom of AI and Machine language, a growing demand for English language students is witnessed especially for the roles of content writer, copywriter and UX writer. In the modern landscape, the Digital and Media sectors offer exciting roles for digital marketing, social media managers and PR officers. This degree also serves as a strong foundation for higher education in Law and Politics leading to government careers such UPSC, SSC, TNPSC and lawyers.

The alumni association of our department is strong and active with many old students returning as motivational speakers and special guests to inspire the newer generations along with the staff of the department. The students can also avail the various scholarship schemes provided by the Government of Tamil Nadu.
